Frequently Asked Questions…

What Is Padel?

Padel was invented in Mexico in the late 1960s as an addictive blend of tennis and squash. It’s usually played in doubles on a glass-and-mesh enclosed court about one-third the size of a tennis court. Scoring follows tennis rules, but rackets (made of carbon fibre or fiberglass) have no strings, and the balls differ slightly in size and pressure.

Padel Rules

  1. Format

    • Padel can be played in singles, but it’s almost always played in doubles.

  2. Scoring

    • Follows tennis scoring (15–0, 15–15, 30–15, etc.).

    • Most players use a golden point at deuce (no advantage).

  3. Serving

    • One player serves for an entire game; determine who serves first by a coin toss or a deciding point.

    • The serve is underarm, with the ball bouncing once before contact, below waist height.

    • At least one foot must remain on the ground behind the service line when serving.

    • The serve starts from the right-hand side, diagonal to the opponent’s service box.

    • Glass vs. Metal

      • If the serve bounces in the box and hits the glass, it’s in play.

      • If it hits the metal fencing, it’s a fault.

    • Let / Fault

      • A let is called if the serve touches the net and bounces in the correct box (hitting the glass is still okay).

      • If the serve touches the net and hits the fence, it’s a fault.

    • You have a second serve if your first serve is a fault.

  4. Return of Serve

    • The ball must bounce once before you can return the serve (no volley returns on serve).

  5. In-Play Ball Contact

    • You may use your side’s glass wall to play the ball; however, you cannot play off the metal fence on your own side.

    • If the ball bounces twice on your side, your opponents win the point.

    • If the ball hits you or your partner, your opponents win the point.

    • If the ball strikes the metal fencing, net posts, or lighting fixtures on your side before crossing the net and bouncing in the opponent’s court, that’s a lost point.

  6. Volleys

    • All volleys are permitted except when returning serve, where you must let the ball bounce first.
